L-R: Alex Joachim, Shane Cadougan, Shne Joachim, Storm Halbich and Nikolas Sylvester at swim meet |
Joachim, who was part of a Black Sands Swim Club in attendance at the Barbados Amateur Swimming Association’s Long Course Championships last weekend, emerged the competition’s top swimmer by winning four gold medals (the 50M Breast, 100 Breast, 200 Breast and the 100 Fly) and one bronze (50 Free).
Joachim established four personal best performances at the competition
The talk of the meet was the very close finish in Joachim’s nail-biting victory over the top Barbadian swimmer in her age category in the 200m Breaststroke event.
Joachim was however not the only success story of last weekend’s competition in Barbados. Nikolas Sylvester won one gold (50M Breast) and two silvers (100 Breast and 200 Breast). Shane Cadogan (11 to 12 age group) won four silver medals (50, 100 and 200 Breast and 50 Free), also improving his times in four events.. Storm Halbich (15 to 17) won one gold (200 Back) and two bronze medals (400 Free and 200 Breast). Justin Sylvester (11-12) won a bronze medal in the 100 Breast. Kyle Dougan (men over 25) won three gold (50 and 100 Breast and 50 Free)
Last year, while competing at the Blue Marlins swim meet in Trinidad and Tobago, Joachim established a new record for that event.
Joachim is this country’s first medalist at the annual Carifta Swim Championships. She won bronze last year. The local swimming governing body does however hope that the colour of the medal would change this year and that some of the other athletes would be among those taking to the podium.
